Clearing the Theoretical Ground: Elements in a Theory of Popular Education

The author argues that a theory of popular education is emerging, the elements of which include (1) an emphasis on the relationship of education and learning to collective and emancipatory struggle, (2) an analytical framework which enables connections to be made between learning and education on the one hand, and analysis of political economy, micro-politics, ideology, and discourse on the other. The theory is tested through a case study of workers' informal learning during the restructuring of an Australian open-cut mine. /// Der Autor argumentiert, daß die entstehende Theorie der Volksbildung folgende Elemente beinhaltet: 1) die Betonung auf einer Beziehung von Bildung und Lernen zu kollektiven und emanzipatorischen Bemühungen, 2) einen analytischen Rahmen, der die Verbindungen zwischen Lernen und Bildung auf der einen Seite und Analysen der Wirtschaftspolitik, Mikropolitik, Ideologie und Diskurs auf der anderen Seite ermöglicht. Die Theorie wird durch eine Fallstudie über informales Lernen während der Umstrukturierung einer Kohlengrube in Australien geprüft. /// L'auteur constate qu'une théorie de l'éducation populaire est en cours d'élaboration, dont les principaux éléments contiennent d'une part un accent sur les rapports de l'éducation et de l'apprentissage avec la lutte collective et émancipatrice, et d'autre part un cadre analytique, qui permet parallèlement d'établir des liens entre apprentissage et éducation, et d'analyser l'économie politique, la micropolitique, l'idéologie et les débats en cours.
