The Challenge of Community Education in Social and Political Change

Tom Lovett is now directing a three-year Community Action Research and Education Project of the Institute, supported by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust and the Northern Ireland Department of Education. The project will allow the Institute, established in I972, to extend its work in community education, community action and community radio. This article derives from the Northern Ireland context from which the project developed, and analyzes two contrasting models for community education and the role of adult education in social and political change.
